An Expressionist...That's Me!
I am over the moon inspired by...here we go...colors, textures, art museums, vintage wallpaper, tapestries, Asian art, Moorish architecture, African batik, Art Nouveau, costume design, antique jewelry, vintage books and fashion magazines, Portuguese and Italian tiles, yarn, paint tools, salvage yards, hardware stores, birds, nature, fairies, forests, fantasy, unicorns, feathers, outer space, bohemia, and the list could go on and on and on. But you get the idea! I do not restrict my sources of inspiration. I let inspiration flow in and through me to influence my art. It's all a grand massive experiment anyway, right!
I am currently creating with acrylic paint and mixed media in most of my paintings. Mixed media includes collage with hand painted paper, oil and chalk pastel, charcoal, paint marker, spray paint and oil stick. It's a wonderful eclectic stash of mediums to create all manner of effects!
Study and Such
I entered my first art show at age fifteen in southern California. I pursued the study of classical realism and traditional atelier methods with a focus on drawing, painting, portraiture and figure study. I went on to experience screen printing, batik, graphic, fiber arts, and art history. Over the years I have studied with many notable artists.
Having been born into a chaotic and dysfunctional family, I retreated into art at an early age. I can most definitely say, “Art saved me!” I’ve never not felt like an artist. Creating is absolutely necessary for my whole wellbeing. Twenty years ago, I transitioned to my abstract style, working in acrylic mixed media. Exciting large paintings danced in my head, waiting to be released on canvas! The images would not rest until I committed to their creation! I find layering the paint, oil pastel, charcoal, graphite, ink, paper, fabric and other materials gives me a great opportunity to create “happy accidents”, textures, history and the mystery that I am in search of.
For twenty-five years I ran my design/production studio, creating fashion accessories for the gift and wholesale trade, Northern Brights, Inc.
Seriously, I find it hard to articulate what my artwork represents: A voyage, foraging for answers, riddles, secrets, conquering self-doubt, scouring through the elements of art in an attempt at mastering something, anything and all the while overflowing with inspiration, so much so that the creative river seems to have too many tributaries to keep up with.
My art journey happens in Foley, Minnesota, my home state. Being an instructor enables me to spill forth the immense amount of passion I have for art and its creation. It’s a joyous ride of self-discovery and exploration, the only journey I have ever wanted.
